Japanese Art 2 products

The Japanese woodblock tradition built a pictorial language that favours line over shadow. The contour itself carries the form; colour sits in flat areas, and depth comes from overlapping planes rather than perspective. When that language reached Europe in the 19th century it left a wide mark, from the Impressionists to poster design.

This section holds works by Katsushika Hokusai and Hiroaki Takahashi; both come as three-piece sets — hung side by side, the three pieces read as one composition. Because the prints have a light ground, wood tones stay close to the tradition while a black frame brings the line forward.
